Meet Dr Harshavardhan, BJP’s CM Candidate for Delhi
A doctor by profession, he was the Health Minister of Delhi in 1993-98. He pioneered the PULSE POLIO immunisation campaign as the health Minster of DELHI during 1993-98. The National Polio Surveillance Project (NPSP) introduced under his supervision was adopted as a model and implemented throughout India, leading to the elimination of the Wild Poliovirus Type 2 by 1999.
He was awarded the Director-General’s Polio Eradication Champion Award Commendation Medal by WHO in 1998 and the Polio Eradication Champion Award by ROTARY INTERNATIONAL in 2001.
Harsh Vardhan has been a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh since childhood. He was elected from Krishna Nagar Vidhan Sabha constituency in 1993 on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s ticket and became a member of the First Legislative Assembly of Delhi. He was appointed Minister of Health and Minister of Law in the Government of Delhi. He became Minister of Education in 1996. During his time in the State’s Health Ministry, he launched Polio Eradication Plan in October 1994. The programme was successful and was adopted throughout the whole nation by the Government of India. He roped in the RSS, along with 400 NGOs and school children, to spread awareness about polio and organise mass immunisation programmes. He was also instrumental in formulating and implementing the Delhi Prohibition of Smoking and Non-Smokers Health Protection Act in 1997, which banned smoking in public places. He also served as the general secretary of the Delhi Medical Association, and was awarded for his role in the anti-tobacco campaigns.
Harsh Vardhan was re-elected in 1998 and 2003.He won from the same seat in 2008 election as well, defeating his primary opponent Indian National Congress councillor Deepika Khullar by 3,204 votes. He is considered to be an experienced and respectable member of the party.
On 23 October 2013, Mr. Harshwardhan was named the Chief Minister candidate for Delhi Assembly elections by BJP
