via HK published on July 23, 2007

NEW DELHI : The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to all states and union territories asking them to explain why the registration of marriage was not being made compulsory for Muslim & Christian religion. The court directed all the states and union territories to file their responses within eight weeks.

The court issued notices after amicus curiae brought it to its notice that the judgment of the apex court directing the Centre and the states to make the registration of marriage compulsory was not being implemented uniformly cutting across religious lines.

Presently marriage registration is compulsory for Hindus only.

However various Muslims organization strongly opposed the move by the Supreme court order, stating court can not interfere their religious matter.
