KOCHI: It was a foolish move on the part of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to raise the issue of ill-treatment of Hindus in Malaysia as a mere issue of Tamilians, former Union minister Subramanian Swamy has said.

‘‘Tamil Muslims in Malaysia kept quiet on the issue, which means that the problem is essentially Hindu humiliation,’’ Swamy said. A number of temples were demolished in Malaysia in the past eight years, which is symbolic of religious intolerance, he said.

The Harward-trained economist was in the city for organising an international conference on ‘India-China-US Triangle’ at SCMS College, Aluva. Swamy said that he had predicted that the LTTE would choose Kerala as their area of operation, years ago.

The force would also spread its arms to Karnataka, he said. ‘‘The Mangalore Port and Bangalore airport are being used by the outfit for its operation. They have connections with ISI and combined operation is safe in these two states,’’ he said. Swamy said that he, along with

AIDMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, had been successful in routing LTTE links in Tamil Nadu. They could not function there and hence they were looking for new areas, he said.

Swamy, founder of Rashtriya Swabhiman Manch, said that the Sethusamudram project would enable free passage of terrorists in the Pack Strait. ‘‘It will be a threat to our internal security,’’ he said.

Swamy said that the implementation of Sethusamudram project would lead to an environment disaster. Around 5,00,000 fishermen would have to look out for alternative employment. He said that the government would have to spend around Rs 1,500 crore for dredging every year. Above all, it was a holy site, he said.

To queries on the Indo-US nuclear deal, he said that such a deal could be only entered into after accepting India as a nuclear weapon state. ‘‘The uranium sources are depleting, so we must thrust on thorium as nuclear fuel,’’ he said. Swamy criticised the Left saying that they supported the deal fearing an early election.

‘‘The Left would completely lose if they were to face an election now,’’ he said. Swamy opined that the UPA Government wouldn’t complete its full term. ‘‘In the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh elections the Congress is sure to lose. Very soon a Hindu nationalist coalition government would come into power at the Centre,’’ he said.
