Indira Gandhi’s emergency was hailed by chamchas because ‘trains were running on time’ ! This phrase whether they knew it or not , was verbatim from Fascist Italy , Mussolini was hailed for making trains run on time.
And for a long time, the constant refrain often heard was India needs a dictator , of course out of mercy for people of India the same ilk used to add an adjective, ‘benign’.

In fact no body needs suspension of democracy or tryst with dictatorship to make trains run on time , to make rains fall in season , to make bureaucrats attend office on time and leave on time, make rice and wheat grow on farms and fields .

Here is a news item about how trains were made to observe punctuality and results of such efforts since Narendra Modi took office. Last we heard and saw, Democracy is still intact, the opposition leaders are not in Tihar or other Central jails like during ‘ Emergency’ but in parliament disrupting democratic process instead and so on.

The moral of this story is , no body needs dictatorship to make trains run on time or make progress and achieve development. All these and more can be done even in a most noisy democracy consisting of at least 75 political parties . The success story of India is still unfolding, yet even now it is proving to the world that largest democracy in the world will do fine with out authoritarianism of Communist China.
