Lucknow : Congress party today suffered a major setback in the civic polls in Uttar Pradesh. Even the Congress candidate was relegated to the third place in the Gandhi family’s stronghold Amethi first time in the history of Congress party.

Out of 58 Nagar Panchayat results available so far, 16 have been won by independents. The BJP and the Samajwadi Party have won 13 seats apiece while the Congress has only emerged victorious in six seats. BJP is leading in most of the remaining seats.

Though the reaction of Congress party is yet to come, but the result in Amethi has shocked the political experts in the country. According to political analysts, the result shows people even from the Congress stronghold areas are also not happy with the performance of Congress – Communist let coalition government at the center specially the way they are handling serious issues like terrorism and internal security. The minority appeasement is the another major reason to vote against Congress party by a large number of people.
