The Income Tax Department’s investigators have found that former Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan’s son-in-law PV Sreenijin had amassed wealth beyond his means in the past four years. According to sources in the department, the investigations are in the final stages.

Sreenijin, a lawyer at the Kerala High Court in Kochi and a former vice-president of the State Youth Congress, had invested several crores of rupees in land and property in Thrissur and Ernakulam districts between 2006 and 2010. As per the affidavit ha had given to the Election Commission, his total assets were worth only Rs 43,000 in 2006.

The I-T Department had subjected to scrutiny the investments Sreenijin had made in Thrissur and Ernakulam districts and the bank accounts he and his wife had held in the past five years. The allegation against him is that he had amassed wealth misusing his relationship with the former Chief Justice of India when he was in service.

During questioning, Sreenijin had told the I-T investigators that the money he had invested had come from the earnings he and his wife KB Sony had made from the legal profession. But sources said that the details of the earnings given by him and his investments did not match.

Allegations of illegal amassment of wealth had also been leveled against Justice Balakrishnan’s brother KG Bhaskaran and another son-in-law MJ Benny. Also, close relatives of the former CJI had reportedly bought land worth Rs 15 crore at Athirampuzha in his home district, Kottayam.

Sreenijin had resigned from the Youth Congress after its national leadership demanded explanation on the allegations. Bhaskaran quit as Special Government Pleader in the High Court after it was reported that he had bought acres of land worth crores of rupees in Tamil Nadu.
