Kerala urged to declare Pongal as holiday districtwise
COIMBATORE: A group Tamil people
living in the border districts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu
yesterday observed a fast, demanding Kerala government
for declaring Pongal day as holiday, as was done by
Tamil Nadu government for Onam.
According to police, about 55 persons, including a
few women, under the Banner Kerala Tamil People welfare
and development movement, said that Tamil Nadu government
has declared Onam a holiday in some of the districts,
like Coimbatore.
Likewise, the Kerala government should declare holiday
on Pongal, where Tamil population was in good number.
They sat in a specially erected pandal at Mudalamada,
about 80 Kms from here, on Tamil Nadu-Kerala border,
police said.
