Karunanidhi in a fix over changing Tamil New Year

published on April 29, 2009

The petition challenging the Tamil Nadu government’s ordinance on Tamil New Year came up for hearing today before the first bench of the Madras High Court. The state government was represented by the Secretary of the Law Department and Chief Justice Shri Gokhale had asked two simple questions to the state government.

How can you change a centuries old tradition? Do you have the Constitutional authority to change it?
Does this change applicable only to the Tamils of your state or for the Tamil Community world over?

Unable to answer (as there is no answer) the representative of the government has requested time for filing the reply and the case has been posted to 4 June.

The petitioners confidently say that the government’s ordinance will be quashed on 4 June 2009.
