Justice KT Thomas earmarks his remuneration for Ayyappa Scholarship

via R Sajan published on July 6, 2011

Retired Supreme Court Justice KT Thomas has created an education fund to give scholarships to children of Sabarimala pilgrims. The fund has been created out of the remuneration he received from the Supreme Court for his services as middleman in the controversy about the selection committee for the Melsanthi (chief priest) of the Sabarimala Ayyappa and Malikappuram temples.  [http://www.deccanherald.com/content/171985/procedure-elect-head-priests-sabarimala.html]. The new Scheme suggested by K.T.Thomas was accepted by the Court and the petitioners to be followed from now.

KT Thomas said that he had demanded no remuneration because he saw it as his privilege to solve the dispute despite being a Christian, and that it was indeed a great honour. The SC granted him Rs 8 lakh. The scholarship is being given from the interest accrued on the fixed deposit. A commission has been appointed to select eligible students. He said a system has been put in place to continue the scholarship even after his death. The scholarship will not be open to professional courses.
