A woman and her daughter were also injured in the attack in Magnar village in the border district of Poonch, about 240 km north of Jammu, around 1.30 a.m., police said.

According to police, the militants descended on to the village and opened indiscriminate fire, killing the people instantly.

Among the killed were two sisters Monika and Priyanaka. Their mother Sunita Sharma and five-year-old sister Kamini also received bullet injuries.

Two brothers Lokesh Kumar and Pankaj Kumar living nearby were also killed.

The killers melted away into darkness after the incident in this Muslim-majority state.
