Ilegal Muslim reservation in AP- BJP to seek Judicial intervention

via HK published on July 5, 2007

HYDERABAD: BJP will challenge the AP Government’s decision to introduce four per cent reservations for Muslims in educational institutions and employment.Even after repeated warnings by the Judiciary, AP government is infact challenging the Indian constitution itself.

State BJP general secretary K. Laxman and spokesperson N. Ramchander Rao said the party would move the court after getting a copy of the BC Commission’s recommendation based on which the Government had declared the reservations.

Government had finalised the reservations with an eye on the Muslim vote bank in the coming elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. The party would also fight the issue politically and, to begin with, stage demonstrations on Thursday during which effigies of Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy and former IAS officer Krishnan would be burnt. It is also planning to petition Governor Rameshwar Thakur on the issue on Thursday.

Hitting out at the BC Commission, the BJP leaders told that it was working for the “welfare of Congress rather than the BCs”. The BC Commission made the recommendations ‘hastily’ in spite of opposition from many Muslim and BC organisations.
