JAIPUR: A 19-year-old woman, allegedly being harassed and blackmailed, immolated herself in Jhotwara area of the city on Friday morning. Admitted to the SMS Hospital with 80% burns, she later died there while undergoing treatment.

The deceased, Anuradha Prajapati, was allegedly being blackmailed by a man on the basis of her ‘doctored’ photographs and mobile clippings. In a statement to family members before her death, the girl alleged that the man wanted her to sleep with him and used to call her late in the night, threatening to make the photographs and clippings public.

The incident sparked tension in the area and hundreds of people gathered near the Durga Das Circle, with the girl’s body on the road. They blocked a major part of the road for nearly four hours demanding that the accused be booked under Section 302 of the IPC and action be taken against the co-accused. They also pelted stones at the police. The police later rounded up the alleged blackmailer.

According to the police, Anuradha, a resident of Shanti Nagar in Kalwar Road, was a first year BA student. “She used to be a friend of one Nafees, who lives in a rented accommodation in front of the victim’s house. He introduced her to his friend Vaseem, who owns the house in which Nafees stayed,” said a police officer. He added that relations between Nafees and Anuradha went sour recently after which the girl started avoiding him.

“Meanwhile, Vaseem started stalking Anuradha and used to call her claiming that he had some objectionable photographs and mobile phone clippings of hers,” said the officer. Vaseem allegedly asked the girl to have sex with him and threatened to “expose” her if she did not give in.

“She was depressed over this and stopped going out fearing Vaseem. In the statement to family members, she said that when she could not bear the harassment and blackmailing, she decided to kill herself,” the officer added. At 2.35 am on Friday, she poured kerosene on her body and set herself on fire.
