NEW DELHI, Feb 8 – BJP today blasted the Congress-led coalition government in Asom for inviting Congress president and UPA chairperson, Sonia Gandhi to inaugurate the 33rd National Games. A last minute controversy may hit the Games, with BJP pointing out that convention has been that either the President, or the Prime Minister, or the Chief Minister or an eminent sportsperson inaugurates the prestigious event.

Inauguration of National Games in Guwahati by UPA chairperson is totally inappropriate and unprecedented. National Games are inaugurated either by head of the state, the President, the Prime Minister, the Chief Minister or head of the sports organisation. Never in the history of sports world, a political leader has been asked to inaugurate the National Games.

“This is not merely a technical point but that of propriety and probity in public life. She can be leader of the party but can’t hold conventions to ransom. BJP condemns this callous attitude” BJP spokesman Prakash Javedkar said briefing newsmen.
