For Whom are the Lawyers Protesting in the Country for?

Legal Fraternity is requested to clarify….

This is in reference to the call by the Members of the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh to observe ‘protest day’ on February 27 by wearing black badges expressing resentment towards the so called ‘brutal attack’ by police on lawyers in the Madras High Court. We feel this call is a one sided one.

The fact is, on 17th February, a Lawyer (Subhramaniam Swamy) was attacked in the Court in Chennai. This Lawyer was appealing against the Government Take over of Chidambaram Temple before a Division Bench in the Madras High Court. He was humiliated by a Section of Lawyers and inhumanly attacked inside the Court hall in front of the Judges. This attack that happened should be seriously condemned first and also the one that happened on 19th February which is a corollary of the earlier incident. The clash of the Police and the Legal fraternity happened when the Police came to arrest a bunch of the attackers.

Andhra Pradesh is a State which has ‘God Consciousness’. Hence, we would like to request the Legal Fraternity of our State to clarify on which incident they would be protesting before proceeding with their program of action scheduled on 27/02/09.
