Experts to probe explosion at RSS office

Madurai (PTI): Explosive experts have been asked to probe if the blasts at the RSS office and a bus-stand in Tirunelveli district on Thursday, were triggered by a remote controlled device, official sources said on Saturday.

Earlier it was thought that unidentified persons had hurled crude bombs at these places. But now it has been found that low-intensity ‘pipe’ bombs had been placed in these areas, a police official told PTI.

“Either the explosion should have been triggered by a remote controlled device or it should be a time-device controlled pipe bomb,” he said.

The explosive experts would visit the sites where the blasts took place, District Collector G Prakash said.

The blast at the RSS office at Tenkasi in Tirunelveli district took place two days before January 26 and the power to the area was disconnected before the incident. Another explosion took at the Tenkasi bus-stand in which one person was injured, he said.

Similarly, members of the Hindu Munnani and Muslim fundamentalists had clashed two days before August 15 last year in which six persons were killed. The clash was a sequel to the murder of Kumarapandi, a local Hindu Munnani leader, and the gang which attacked Kumarapandi had disconnected the power to the area by switching off the transformer, he said.

Meanwhile, police personnel were deployed in Tenkasi town to maintain strict vigil on the occasion of Republic day on Saturday.
