Doctor who performed autopsy on Sadiq Batcha resigns

Chennai: Adding to the mystery behind the sudden suicide by A Raja’s close aide Sadiq Batcha, forensic expert Dr V Dekal who had performed the autopsy, and certified that Batcha died of asphyxiation, resigned from government service on Monday.

Dr Dekal, heads the department of forensic sciences at the Madras Medical College. He had led the team of doctors, at the Royapettah government hospital, which conducted the post-mortem on the body of 39-year-old Batcha.

What led to the sudden decision is yet unknown, however, the resignation has once again given credence to speculations pointing to grey areas in the suicide story.

Sadiq Batcha was thought to be someone who ‘knew all’ about the 2G spectrum scam, especially the channelling of Raja’s ill gotten wealth.

He was repeatedly questioned by the CBI over his alleged role in Raja’s murky dealings. Batcha was the managing director of a real estate company – Green House Promoters – in which Raja’s wife, brother and a nephew held stakes.

Later it was reported that he had agreed to turn approver in the case and was, reportedly, set to fly to Delhi to meet CBI officials on the day – March 16 – when he was found hanging from the ceiling in his home.

The suicide note, recovered by the police later that day, stated that he was “embarrassed” by the raids and the extensive media coverage and hence decided to end his life. He had also written that Raja is a “good human being”.
