BJP State executive member M R Gandhi brutally attacked in Nagercoil

 NAGERCOIL: A state-level functionary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu was on Sunday injured after he was hacked allegedly by a four-member gang here, sparking protests by the party workers who resorted to blocking of roads.

M R Gandhi, BJP’s state executive member, was out on his morning walk when the four youths who followed him on two motorcycles, waylaid and attacked him with sharp-edged weapons, police said.

Public in the area rescued him and admitted him to the hospital where his condition was stated to be stable in the intensive care unit when reports last came on his condition.

As news about the attack spread, BJP workers gathered before the hospital and blocked the traffic, demanding arrest of the assailants.

Gandhi had unsuccessfully contested the assembly elections from the Colachael constituency in 2011.

BJP state president Pon Radhakrishnan visited Gandhi and condemned the attack on the part functionary.

DMK leader and former minister Suresh Rajan also condemned the attack.
