BJP condemns attack on Vedic Mutt in Salem

via PTI published on December 8, 2006

Tiruchirappalli, Dec. 8 : Condemning the attack on a mutt in Salem and similar incidents elsewhere in the aftermath of the desecration of a statue of social reformer “Periyar” E V Ramasamy at nearby Srirangam, BJP leader H Raja today alleged whenever the DMK was in power there was “least protection to the Hindus and Hindu temples”.

Addressing mediapersons here, Raja, Vice-President of the state unit of the party, said Karunanidhi should own moral responsibility for the incidents in Salem and elsewhere.

He also condemned the inclusion of spiritual leader Swami Dayananda Saraswathi’s name in the FIR filed in Srirangam in connection with the desecration of the statue.

Criticising the government for having given the permision to erect the statue in the place, Raja said it was “a totally absurd and wrong decision” to allow the statue of an atheist to be installed at Srirangam, which is the foremost among the 108 “Divya Desams” (sacred centres) of Vaishnavite Hindu tradition.

Raja said Periyar was known for his “harsh words against Hindu Gods and physical attacks on idols”.

Replying to a question on the course of action the BJP would take, he said already organisations like the RSS and related outfits were considering staging state-wide agitations in the next few days. The BJP would come out with its action plan on Dec.12 when the state executive would meet in Chennai, he added.
