Birth anniversary of Swami Nirmalanandaji Maharaj

PALAKKAD: The 145th birth anniversary of Swami Nirmalanandaji Maharaj and the 69th anniversary of the Swami Nirmalananda temple consecration were celebrated at the Sree Ramakrishna ashram in Ottappalam on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Spiritual discourses, bhajans, processions and a public meet were held. Swami Nirmalananda Giri, Swami Suprabhananda, Swami Bodhananda, P.Achuthan, Mavellikara A.E. Ramachandra Kurup and Kesavan Namboodhiri spoke on the occasion.

“Swami Nirmalananda preached equality which is pivotal to all vedic traditions and rooted out casteism from society. He was one of the main architects of social and spiritual revivalism in Kerala,” Nirmalananda Giri said during the discourse on “Kadopanishad”.

“Swami Nirmalananda was the physician who came to treat Kerala which was termed as a “lunatic asylum” by Swami Vivekananda,” said P.Achuthan.

Swami Suprabhananda, president of the Sri Ramakrishna ashram in Koyilandi, presided over the meet. He also released a book titled “Sri Nirmalananda on Sri Ramakrishna”.

US-based Pallatheri Subramanian received the first copy. Subramanian is a direct disciple of Swami Nirmalananda. Swamini Bodhananda spoke about Sri Ramakrishna, his life and teachings.

Mavellikara Ramachandra Kurup rendered a discourse on Sarada Devi on the first day of the celebrations. Kesavan Namboodhiri spoke on Bhagavad Gita.
