HYDERABAD: The Congress Legislature Party has
defended the expenditure of Rs. 9 crore incurred by the government in
organising the conference
of women’s self-help groups (SHGs) at Tirupati that was addressed by United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday,
Chief Whip N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Minister Botcha Satyanarayana and MPs
K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao and A. Venkatarami Reddy said the APSRTC was
paid nearly Rs. 8 crore for buses hired for the meeting.
There was
nothing wrong in organising the meeting to explain the government’s
initiatives, including Rs. 11,000 crore bank linkages targeted for SHGs
this year.

They said the Telugu Desam Party’s remarks that liquor and biryani were supplied to women was tantamount to ‘insult.’

Vendors selling food at such large gathering was common enough and the
Congress was prepared to tender apologies if any of its leaders were
engaged in supply of liquor.
