Anti-Hindu Posts: 2 FIRs against Teesta Setalvad for ‘Inflammatory Post’

published on August 28, 2014
A day after a Twitter image post by social activist Teesta Setalvad that juxtaposed a picture of journalist James Foley with an ISIS terrorist against photoshopped images with Hindu imagery such as Sudarshan Chakra and goddess Kali, Hindu groups have registered complaints against her. City police registered two complaints at Ghatlodia and Gomtipur where members of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Shiv Sena were complainants respectively.

In Ghatlodia, Raju Patel, a resident of Ghatlodia, has registered a complaint against Teesta. In his complaint, he has mentioned that he came across the news and image on his Facebook page and it offended him. ‘The photo compares revered Hindu gods and goddesses with terrorists due to which it has grievously hurt sentiments of Hindu community. It is an effort to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the country,’ the application reads.

A G Gohil, inspector of Ghatlodia police station, said that they have registered a complaint and have applied sections of IPC and IT Act.

In Gomtipur, Jeetendra Solanki, a resident of Gomtipur and vice president of Shiv Sena, has become the complainant. According to his complaint, similar to the one filed in Ghatlodia, it is an effort to disturb the peace and punitive action should be taken against Setalvad so that abuse of Hindu icons stops in cyberspace.

When questioned about further action in the case, police said that they would try to reach Setalvad to get her version. “There has been significant rise in number of cases where morphed pictures signifying one community or another appear on social networking sites. While the original post is difficult to find due to repeated shares, even the senders can be charged under various sections of IPC and IT Act,” said a senior city police official.
