JERUSALEM: In a significant development, senior officials from India and Israel met here for wide ranging discussions on strategic affairs. The two-day meeting held on last Wednesday and Thursday was the fifth round of the Israel-India joint working group on counter terrorism.

A spokesman of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of Israel said here that the Indian delegation was led by Ambassador K.C. Singh, additional secretary international security at the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. The Israeli delegation was led by Ambassador Miriam Ziv, Deputy Director-General for strategic affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel.

Israel is one of the very few nations in the international community which always stand by India in its fight against terrorism. Israeli security agencies keep track of the anti-India movements by the Islamic jihadis and warn their Indian counterparts about possible attacks in all parts of the country. Since the UPA Government is following a policy of appeasing the Muslims and the Communists, who hold an inherent hatred against the Jews, its hands are tied from entering into any sort of agreement with the Israeli government.

The talks in Jerusalem also centered on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. Though a very small state, Israel is a nuclear weapon state and the international community of nations always supports the right of Israel to have nuclear weapons. The Jewish state is always under the threat of attacks by the terrorists of Hamas and other various Islamic organizations.

The two sides had a wide-ranging and constructive exchange of views in the spirit of friendship and mutual understanding. The discussions included a review of regional and multilateral issues.

It was the NDA regime under BJP which played a major role in normalizing the relations between India and Israel. Though the Muslims and Communists in the country had tried their best to sabotage the visit of Ariel Sharon, former Israeli Prime Minister to India, the trip went of peacefully. The people of India hold the state of Israel and Jews in high esteem. It is worthwhile to note that Jews and Parsis are the only two communities in India which never approach the government with demands for special rights.
