US county decides to observe Jan 12 as Sanskrit day
WASHINGTON: Recognising the importance of India’s ancient Sanskrit language, Washoe county of Nevada in the US proclaimed January 12 as ‘Sanskrit Day’.
Washoe county recognises the importance of the Sanskrit language and decided observe January 12, 2008 as Sanskrit Day, the chairman of the Washoe county commission Robert M Larkin said.
This decision comes on the eve of first ever two-day Sanskrit language seminar-cum-class, to be started on Saturday in the county. About 50 people are expected to participate in the event, organised by eminent Indo-American leader Rajan Zed.
“Without the study of Sanskrit, one cannot become a true learned man,” the proclamation also quoted Mahatma Gandhi as saying.
