BEIJING: Pakistan may have caused some jitters in Beijing by accepting
vast amount of US aid recently. But Islamabad has been quick to placate
its friends across the border by issuing a commemorative to mark the
60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

The decision comes within days after Pakistan began constructing an
assembly plant for JF-17 fighters. These planes, expected to form the
backbone of future Pakistani aerial combat fleet, are being put
together with Chinese assistance.

An elated Chinese ambassador in Pakistan, Luo Zhaohui, said the 60-year
old friendship between the two countries will continue in the next 600
years and for ever and future generations will benefit from this mutual
cooperation, the official Xinhua reported from Islamabad.

Pakistan also celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Chinese republic
by establishing a think-tank on China on Thursday. The Pakistan China
Institute, as it is called, will “work in key sectors of Pakistani
state and society including political parties, civil society,
educational institutions, opinion leaders, media and business
community,” its chairman Mushahid Hussain was quoted as saying.

There was no direct mention of the fact that China’s closeness to
Pakistan is motivated by the latter’s relationship with India. But
Hussain, a former minister, said, “China has always stood by Pakistan
in every conflict and crisis and China is Pakistan’s all-weather
friend.”

The 10-rupee coin issued by the State Bank of Pakistan, 70% of copper
and 25% of nickel with a diameter of 27.5 mms and weight of 8.25 grams,
Xinhua said.

Pakistani minister for science and technology Muhammad Azam Khan Swati
recently opened a seminar on Pakistan-China business relationship in
Islamabad saying: “With this we’re celebrating the 60th anniversary of
the great Chinese nation. I salute to it from the core of my heart.”
