3000 students to read Bhagwad Gita today

NAGPUR: Taking Gita ka gyan beyond the realms of the aged and experienced, the KML Mankar Shekshanik Vikas and Sewa Pratishtan have jointly organised a collective reading of all the 18 chapters of the holy book by students of 18 schools on Thursday at Chitnis Park.

A total of 3000 students would read the full book.

The event conceptualised by retired educationist Dr Baba Nandanpawar aims to propagate Bhagwad Gita and its teachings. The students are from class 8, 9 and 10. Each school was allotted one chapter and the students were given a copy of the holy book in the month of June and were asked to memorise the chapter allotted to them. Says Nandanpawar, “We have checked the progress and are confident the children will be able to read it out.”

Students have been mastering the verses under the tutelage of the Sanskrit teacher of their school. There are 700 verses in the entire book. All the participants will read out the 12th chapter together. It is about the conduct of students. The entire reading would take less than two hours.

Pt Bachraj Vyas Vidyalaya has got the largest number of students participating. 185 students of the school would be reading the 76 shlokas of the 18th chapter which is last and the longest. Archana Joshi, the Sanskrit teacher who has been coaching the students, says, “I have divided the entire chapter into three parts and allotted three sections of standard IX to learn them. This has helped in dividing the load and the students too have been able to master it in six months’ time. As the last chapter contains the essence of the entire Bhagwad Gita, I feel that this knowledge acquired at such a young age will benefit them throughout their lives.”

The holy book will be carried to the venue in a palki from Navyug Vidyalaya and the reading will commence at 2 pm with the blowing of a conch.
