5 devotees electrocuted, 50 suffer shock as temple car hits live wire

Vellore, Tamil Nadu, May 3 : Five people were electrocuted when the temple car which they were pulling came into contact with a live wire at Nellurpettai Village, near Guydiattam of this District in the early hours of today.
Police said nearly 300 devotees were pulling iron chains of the temple car of Sri Karupuleswarar Temple when the metal ‘kalasam’ atop the car came into contact with a live overheard wire at Bernampet Road at Gudiyattam electrocuting five people even as 50 others suffered shock. Senior police officials rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to Gudiyattam and Vellore Government Hospitals.
This is the third such incident in as many days in Tamil Nadu claiming a total of 12 lives. On May one, the car festival at the ancient Aranikottai Kailasanathar Temple at Arani Town in Tiruvannamalai District, turned tragic when five devotees were crushed to death and an equal number injured when the temple car overturned.
Yesterday, two persons were electrocuted and as many injured when a ‘Palakku’ (religious car) came in contact with a live overhead wire at Nagore in Nagapattinam District.
