MOKA, MAURITIUS, January 16, 2010: The Chairman of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute State Secondary School, Mr R. Dwarka, informed an assembled audience at the Thiruvalluvar Day celebrations on Saturday that a module on the Tirukural of the South Indian weaver poet was to be introduced in all their academic qualifications from certificate through to degree level.

He stated that the lofty wisdom contained within its verses would broaden the horizons of any student no matter what their chosen path of study.

The Mahatma Gandhi Institute has ardently developed its educational programs to preserve the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi as well as the ancient languages and traditional arts of India, including vocal, dance and instrumental music.

The Tirukural is a classic of couplets or aphorisms authored by the Tamil saint Thiruvalluvar, considered to be one of the earliest works to focus on ethics. The poet-saint not only deals with general administration, but he also codified clear directions to mankind on how they should behave and act in social, political, religious and family circles.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Tirukural is a textbook of indispensable authority on moral life. The maxims of Thiruvalluvar have touched my soul.”
