THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It was a march to history as thousands of Rashtreeya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activists took out a sanchalan across the state, marking the birth centenary day of its second Sar Sanghachalak Guruji Madhava Sadasiva Golwalkar on Wednesday.

The year 2006-’07 is being celebrated as the birth centenary of Golwalkar who became the Sar Sangachalak of the RSS in 1940 after the demise of its founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar.

Sree Guruji, a professor by profession, was attracted to the nationalistic forces since young age. He later took up sanyas under Swami Akhandananda Maharaj, the famous saint.

Instead of looking out for spiritual solace for himself, Guruji wanted to work for the country to regain its past glory that was lost primarily owing to the weaknesses in the society.

During the turbulent phase of the country, he traveled across it and delivered lectures to enrich the ideological content.

When the centenary celebrations of the RSS were designed almost a year-and-a-half ago, the internal security situation in the state was quite precarious, according to the RSS activists.

The wounds of the Marad killings were still afresh and burning. It was the need of the hour to restore the confidence and courage of the society.

The Rashtra Raksha Sanchalan is being organised to regain the confidence of the society.

The RSS believes that the sanchalan would, on the lines of the flag march of the Army, embolden the society to put an end to terrorism and subversive activities.

The RSS activists say that they hold meetings everyday to maintain vigil and to be cautious of the impending dangers posed by terrorist incursions.

Quoting the slogan ‘Tasmad Jagratha Jagratha’, they maintain that eternal vigil is the price to be paid for preserving our independence
