City to celebrate Sreekrishna Jayanti

KOCHI: Kochiites are gearing up to celebrate with great zest Sreekrishna Jayanti, which falls on September 14. Balagokulam Sreekrishna Jayanti reception committee has been formed for the purpose.

The Janmashtami programmes include flag day, cow worship, cultural and family meet, arts competitions for children, and Shobhayatra.

The Janmashtami award dedication meet 2006 is also being held here. Sreekrishna Jayanti celebrations, which originated in Kerala, have always stood for propagating the moral principles and bringing people together.

For sowing the seeds of goodness in the minds of people, and for inculcating peace and happiness among them, such celebrations are necessary, says a press release issued by Krishanabalan Paliath, general secretary of the reception committee.

The Janmashtami celebrations at Maradu kicked off with hoisting saffron flags at 25 places. Besides, cow worship was conducted at 10 places.

The family meet at Ernakulam Town Hall on Tuesday was inaugurated by Kaviyoor Ponnamma by putting a garland on Sreekrishna statue. Cine star Siddique attended the meet, presided over by Justice R Bhaskaran.

The key note address was delivered by Hindu Aikyavedi state vice president K.P. Shashikala. Justice D Sreedevi, former Chairperson of Women’s Commission, and poet Rameshan Nair gave felicitations.

Several interesting contests will be conducted on Wednesday as well.

Thousands of children will don the role of Sreekrishna for the colourful processions accompanied by music and dance, which will begin from North Paramaradevi Temple, Ayyappankavu Temple, Ravipuram Sreekrishna Temple, and T D Temple.

The processions will converge at Jos Junction here to form the Mahasobha yatra at 5.30 pm to end at Siva Temple. The Sreekrishnans in the processions will be cordially greeted by all and sundry.
