It’s New Year Time ; Vishu celebrated across the state
T’PURAM: Keralites today celebrated Vishu, the new year on the first day of Malayalam month Medam, with traditional religious fervour and gaiety.
People after sighting the ‘Vishukkani’ in their homes, visited nearby temples wearing new clothes.
‘Vishukkanni’ is a ritual associated with the festival. The fortunes of the coming year, it is believed, depend on the ‘Vishukkani’ one sees first at the dawn on Vishu.
There was heavy rush of devotees at the Sree Krishna Temple in Guruvayur and Ayyappa temple in Sabarimala.
Elders in the family gave ‘vishukaineetam’ (cash) to youngsters wishing them prosperity in their life.
Children also burst crackers signifying the start of New Year.
In the afternoon, family members get together and partakes the ‘Vishu sadya’ (traditional Kerala lunch).
