Amrithabharathi vidyapeedam – To regain our Cultural Heritage and Vedic knowledge

via Krishnakumar published on July 12, 2010

Amrithabharathi vidyapeedam was established at a time when the country‘s cultural heritage and Vedic knowledge was discarded by educationists. The ignorance and contempt for Indian culture was a product of the imperial rule. But in its hunt for jobs, free India also is moving on the same track. Caught in the spell of foreign glamour, the society is content with acquiring material knowledge . Even value –based education recommended by many commissions is being discarded.

It was in this background that an educational scheme was evolved in Kerala focusing on mastery of mother tongue and Sanskrit. Well known scholar Prof: R Vasudevan potti is Chancellor of the Vidyapeedam. There is also an Advisory Panel with Prof. Vishnunarayanan Namboothiri, Sri P Parameswaran and others as members.

The Vidyapeedam is conducting examinations at three levels – Prabhodhini, Sandeepani and Bharathi. The syllabus is decided by an expert panel. Age is not a factor in determining the eligibility for appearing the examinations. Every year the three examinations are held on Deepavali day. Around 5000 candidates appear for the examinations at more then 100 centers across Kerala. A large number of teachers have offered their free service for the purpose. Degrees are awarded at functions participated by distinguished personalities. At the first function, Swami Chinmayananda awarded degrees to those who passed the examinations.

Even while depending upon foreign countries for getting jobs, we should strive to understand ourselves and keep our culture intact. Amrithabharathi plays a helping role in this. Evident are available in the history that once foreigners came to India to study our history. Now we can be proud of the fact that there is an institution in our country which helps us to share our cultural glory. It is our duty to maintain and nourish this precious institution.

The last date to register for this year’s exam is July 31st.
