Madani drew Nazeer, others into terror grid: Police

Even as the Fast Track Court (5) of Bangalore is to examine in detail the anticipatory bail application of Abdul Nasser Madani, 31st accused in the 2008 bombings case, on Tuesday, reports from the Karnataka capital say that the police have accused him of being part of the terror group that had planned and executed the blasts.

The additional chargesheet submitted at the Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Bangalore by the Karnataka Police says that the objective of the perpetrators of the blasts was to wage Jihad in India and to trigger insurgency by destabilizing the country economically. The chargesheet was submitted in the court on June 11.

The chargesheet had named Madani as the 31st accused in the case mainly on the basis of the statements given by LeT’s South India commander Thadiyantavide Nazeer, the prime accused. There are a total of 32 accused in the blasts case and majority of them belong to Kerala. The Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Bangalore had on June 15 issued a non-bailable warrant against Madani.

According to the chargesheet, it was Madani who had brought Nazeer into the extremist network. It says that the gateway to the world of terror for Nazeer had been the militancy-oriented Islamic Sewak Sangh that Madani had been running in the early 1990s and the political party – PDP – he had formed later.

The police document says that Nazeer was attracted to the ISS by the fiery public speeches Madani used to deliver during that period, which were full of scathing criticisms against Hinduism. Nazeer had also told the police that it was on the instructions of Madani he had started the organization, Noorish’e-Twareqat, as a screen for terror operations. The investigating officials have collected CDs and cassettes of the religious speeches that Madani had made during that period.

Nazeer and his companions had aimed at launching Jihad and to convert all Indians into Muslims through coercion and terror, the chargesheet says. The ultimate aim of the gang was to make Indian Dar-ul Islam (the soil of Islam), and Nazeer and others had forged connections with the LeT with the help of its funds-manager Sarfaraz Nawaz, the police document says.

According to Bangalore-based sources, the chargesheet has clearly stated that 17 terror men, including Nazeer and third accused Sarfaraz Nawaz, had taken part in the camp, organized at Madepura in Coorg district of Karnataka for executing the bombings plan. It also says that Madani had visited this camp, but it is not clear whether Madani had reached there with the knowledge of what was going on there.

The chargesheet says that this terror gang had viewed all Hindu organizations and the BJP as enemies and therefore they had given particular emphasis for the plan to carry out extensive blasts in BJP-ruled states. It says that all the 32 persons, named as accused in the three chargesheets the police had filed in the court, had close connections with Indian Mujahiddin, the Indian version of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayyeba.

Madani has repeatedly denied all these charges and has reportedly quoted in his anticipatory bail application the relevant observations of the Supreme Court to the effect that nobody should be listed as accused on the basis of the statements of other accused. The application also says that the court had made such an observation while acquitting him in the Coimbatore serial blasts case.
