CM family sponsors temple events in city

July 13: The Chief minister’s devout second wife Rajathiammal inaugurated works running into crores at the famous Devi Karumariamman temple at Tiruverkadu, about 15 km from Chennai.

Rented rooms for the godessess’ devotees, at whopping cost of 57 lakh, and plusher accommodation for the temple’s VIP visitors, at a cost of Rs 45 lakh, just a few steps from the grand entrance, were thrown open on Monday. The generous donation of the pilgrims, as well as a sizeable chunk of funds from the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department has also made it possible for the temple administration to begin the fragile face-lift of the third prakaram.

The enthused mother of Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi, who had for company several other VIPs, including HR and CE minister K.R. Periakaruppan, and MLA P. Ranganathan, also inaugurated the refurbished library and dhanya mantapam at the temple.

This is not the only time the CM’s family, headed by the atheist octogenarian has shown an interest in the Tiruverkadu temple, which locals believe is the magnet that has attracted development to the sleepy town. Ms Rajathiammal, a familiar face in the Anjeneyar temple near her home in CIT Colony in the city, had also visited the godessess’ shrine at Thiruverkadu in Kalaignar’s previous tenure, a grand majestic affair where the political guests were welcomed with top honours. The CM is ev-en said to have participated with his wife in some of the pujas at the time. Even de-puty CM’s wife Durga Stalin, a regular temple goer, ta-kes part in religious affairs.
