Two more Green Terrorists from Kerala arrested by Karnataka Police

The two Malayalee militants arrested by the Karnataka Police the other day in connection with the 2008 Bangalore bombings are said to be operatives of the LeT holding key positions in the terror group.

Militants Puthukkulam Ummer Farooq of Parappanangadi in Malappuram district was arrested from Ajmer, Rajasthan and Ibrahim Moulvi of Vellamunda in Wayanad was held from Badiadukka in Kerala’s Kasaragod district on Friday night, according to the Bangalore police, who were yet to ascertain the exact role of the two in the bombings.

Moulvi, said to be holding a commander’s position in the LeT and an aide of Thadiyantavide Nazeer, prime accused in the Bangalore bombings case, had been staying at a mosque in Badiadukka as a functionary for the past one-and-a-half years under a false name and address, according to the police.

A team of the Karnataka Police had reached Badiadukka three days ago as per the secret information received by Shankar M Bidari, City Police Commissioner, Bangalore and they arrested Moulvi. Bidari confirmed the arrests to mediamen on Saturday. The police had earlier issued lookout notice for Moulvi, who had been declared an absconder.

According to sources, Moulvi had acted as an aide to Thadiyantavide Nazeer, LeT’s South India commander, for recruiting Malayalee youths to the terror outfit for training in Kashmir. The security forces in an encounter had killed four such Malayalee militants in Kupwara, Kashmir in October, 2008, marking the start of a hunt for Islamists in Kerala.

Police sources had earlier said that KP Sabir alias Ayub of Kannur, believed to be the top-most functionary of the LeT for Kerala, had married one of Moulvi’s nieces. The investigators had found that Sabir had stayed in the hotel room of David Coleman Headley in West Asia.

Police sources say that it was Ummer Farooq who had recruited the four Malayalee militants killed in Kupwara. Abdul Rahim, one of these militants, belonged to Parappanangadi in Malappuram district from where Farooq also hailed.

Farooq is said to be the chief executive behind the terror act of burning a Tamil Nadu state bus at Kalamassery, Kochi on September 9, 2005, in which Nazeer is the first accused. Investigators had said that Farooq was behind the pipe bomb that exploded at the Ernakulam district collectorate on July 10, 2009.
