Gujarat Govt to oppose Bill on communal violence

The BJP Government in Gujarat would oppose the Centre’s proposed Bill on controlling communal violence as it violates the Constitution’s basic tenets of equality before law.

Displaying the party’s views on the proposed Bill on communal violence, the BJP’s resolution on it was moved by Chief Minister Narendra Modi at the recently held National Executive meeting in Lucknow.

The proposed draft Bill, intended to curb incidents of communal violence in the country, is required to be ratified by the State legislatures after it is passed by Parliament.

“Gujarat Government would oppose the Bill as it violates the Constitutional principle of equality”, State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dileep Sanghani told The Pioneer on Monday.

The proposals in the draft Bill are not in the interest of the nation as they aim to protect a particular community in the event of communal riots, Sanghani explained why the Gujarat Government would oppose it.

The draft proposals are politically motivated, he alleged, and added that the Congress-led UPA Government would not be able to pass the Bill in Parliament.

The Bill goes against the Constitution and the even British never thought of bringing such unequal laws, Sanghani told this correspondent.
