Alapuzha Coastline falling to unknown land mafia

via HK published on July 22, 2011

Persons unknown to the area are on a land purchase spree along Alappuzha coastline from Alappuzha to Andhakaranazhi. Already thousands of acres they have purchased from the fisherman by offering unbelievable price as high as 5 lakhs per cent. Even though there are laws enacted to protect the coastline areas and constructions in those areas, concerned authorities are turning a blind eye to what is going on in the area which could pose as a threat to national security. Purchasers tell the natives that they are going to develop the beach and turn the place a haven for tourist, but nothing of the sort has happened in the area. As per the costal area protection law, any construction is allowable at a distance of 200 meters from the coast, but this has not been cared by the purchasers.

As a result of such purchases, acres of land west of the Alappuzha coastal road is now lying vacant with bushes and wild growth luring the anti-socials. Among the purchased plots, there are few with houses and some of those houses have been converted as `home stay’ accommodation which naturally has become safe place for those looking for hide outs and for illicit activities.  Police are not giving much attention to these lonely areas.
