Chennai: 5 held for suspected terror links

CHENNAI: The city police detained five persons including four college students, at Selaiyur on Sunday on suspicion of having links with a terror outfit. They were later taken to the St Thomas Mount police station for inquiry.
Police said they acted on information from the Intelligence Bureau in Delhi and police teams searched places in Vijayaraman Nagar, Camp Road and Rajeshwari Nagar at Selaiyur on Saturday night when they reportedly detained five persons in Vijayaraman Nagar.
Police said that the search began after IB had allegedly tapped calls of members of a terror outfit and many calls were traced to Chennai.
Police sources, who said that the persons were all from Durbandhar district of Bihar, named the persons taken for inquiry as Imran Hussein (23), an MBA student with a private university at Selaiyur, Abdul Rahman (20), a first year engineering student from the same college, Mohammad Mohideen (20), a first year ECE student from a private engineering college at Padappai, Sewaj Hussein (20), a first year mechanical engineering student from a college at Padappai, and Insab Khan (45), a relative of one of the students.
Officials of the Intelligence Bureau were allegedly involved in conducting the inquiry at the St Thomas Mount police station and the inquiry was still on as of Sunday evening. Delhi police were understood to have arrived in the city for the search operation but local police refused to confirm it.
“We have detained students on suspicion. Till now, they are only suspects,†said a senior police official.
Police sources further said that they were on the lookout for three other students, who were living with the detainees.
Sources also alleged that the police are on the lookout for two persons who had come to the city from Delhi to impart training.
