‘Catholicity’ killed a Mother

Bangalore: The ‘murder’ of Indian dentist Savita Halappanavar in Ireland has invited strong protests and reaction across the world against the primitive laws in Ireland based on Catholic Christianity.

Halappanavar, 31, died in Ireland due to blood poisoning after doctors allegedly refused to terminate her 17-week-long pregnancy, telling her that “this is a Catholic country”.

“When the consultant came on the ward rounds on Monday morning, Savita said if they could not save the baby, could they induce an end to the pregnancy. The consultant said: ‘As long as there is a fetal heartbeat, we can’t do anything’.” “Again on Tuesday morning…, the consultant said it was the law, that this is a Catholic country. Savita said: ‘I am neither Irish nor Catholic’ , but they said there was nothing they could do” .Reportedly Indian Government have taken up the matter in Diplomatic level with Irish Government and demanded probe into the matter.
