Will ‘Secular’ Mullas soon issue a Fatwa on Kottakkal Aryavaidyasala?

Stop Talibanisation in Malappuram district

O V Vijayan is one of India’s greatest writers. His novel, Kazakkinte Itihasam (The Saga of Kazak), is considered a classic in Indian literature. It is a different matter that he did not receive the Nobel for the great work. When the teachers of the government higher secondary school at Kottakkal in Malappuram district, where Vijayan studied, decided to erect a suitable memorial for the writer, the municipal authorities and the government should have extended full cooperation. Far from that, they have been doing everything possible to stop the project. It may be a coincidence that the education department and the municipality are controlled by politicians belonging to the Indian Union Muslim League, a constituent of the ruling United Democratic Front.

Taking a cue from their opposition, some miscreants have defaced a statue of Vijayan which should have been the central piece of the planned memorial. Nobody has come forward to claim responsibility for the heinous act. Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has rightly described the grisly act as the handiwork of the Taliban. He was not wide of the mark as the attack on the statue reminded the Keralites of the destruction of the centuries-old Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan.
