Abdul Nasser Madani involved in more blast cases: Karnataka Police

BANGALORE: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Nasser Madani, arrested in connection with the serial blasts that had rocked the city exactly five years ago, also played a crucial role in explosions in Surat, Mumbai and Delhi, the state central crime branch (CCB) police submitted before the high court of Karnataka on Thursday.

The CCB made the submission while opposing Madani’s bail application. The court also heard that four more accused persons in the Bangalore blasts case were believed to be absconding in an enemy country.

Opposing the bail plea, the state argued that Madani, if released, would establish contact with the absconders and try to destroy evidence.

The police also told the court that Madani, hale and healthy, has been exaggerating his diseases.

Public prosecutor S Dore Raju said the state was ready to provide medical care to Madani at a government hospital.

The state contested the PDP leader’s complaint that he was partially blind. Raju said Madani has been reading and writing, and also watching TV channels. “There is no vision impairment,” he said.

“The diseases are common and not fatal, and can be cured if he follows medical advice and diet. The disease of the petitioner is deliberately magnified,” the state submitted, adding that his treatment at Soukhya International Holistic Health Centre had cost Rs 9 lakh to the exchequer.

The state expressed fear that if granted bail, the trial would get delayed since it would be difficult to bring Madani back.

Justice H N Nagamohan Das adjourned the hearing for a week following a request by Madani’s counsel. The PDP leader filed the bail petition claiming he was not given proper follow-up treatment. He had also stated his wish to tend to his mother who has been suffering from cancer.

Madani has been named the 31st accused in the July 25, 2008, serial blasts, which killed a woman. He was arrested from Anwarsseri, Kollam, on August 17, 2010.
