Modi seeks nationwide ban on cow slaughter
Ahmedabad, Nov 21 2005
Buoyed by the recent Supreme Court verdict upholding ban on cow slaughter, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday favoured a nation-wide ban on cow slaughter. “Each country has a law to protect its national animal and bird, like India has for the peacock. In the same way, I am sure that even Italy has some laws for animals. Let the Congress leaders and workers present here also pass on the message to implement this law nationwide,” he said in an obvious reference to Sonia Gandhi. Modi was speaking at a function organised by the Jain community to felicitate him. The Chief Minister also said he had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in this regard after the recent Supreme Court verdict on banning cow slaughter went in favour of the Gujarat Government. The Supreme court had on October 26 reversed a 36-year-old ruling and upheld the constitutional validity of a Gujarat law imposing a ban on slaughtering of bulls, and bullocks.
