Grand wedding in CPI(M) patriarch’s family

via Hindu Voice published on November 26, 2005

For the grand old man of India’s proletariat party, the show was ostentatious enough.

The groom arrived in a cream-coloured Mercedes to the stunningly decorated venue. Over 1,500 guests were entertained by a rock band from Delhi and singers from Mumbai and served a dozen different cuisines.

Ludhiana almost came to a standstill to celebrate the wedding of Sandeep Singh, grandson of CPI(M) patriarch Harkishan Singh Surjeet. Sandeep married Ravinder Kaur, daughter of J.S. Khular, Income Tax Chief Commissioner, North Zone, who is posted at Delhi and hails from Ludhiana.

At the tony Harsheela Resorts spread over 8 acres in Mullanpur, on the outskirts of the city, a wedding planner from Delhi choreographed a grand wedding.

The catering team from Chandigarh had 250 people-cooks and waiters. Police personnel from the city and even neighbouring Jagraon were on duty as the city witnessed unprecedented VVIP movement.

Closed-circuit TVs monitored security inside the venue as well as at the parking lots. Convoys of vehicles carrying VIPs for the wedding lined up on the Ferozepur road, where U-turn was prohibited for the day to avoid traffic jams.

The football ground of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) was converted into a helipad. Overnight, roadrollers and sprinklers converted the ground into the landing site.

Since a reception is planned in Delhi soon, not many leaders from the Capital came for the wedding. Among those present included former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, Preneet Kaur, Patiala MP and wife of Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.
