Gujarat Modified once again!

The BJP continued it’s winning streak sending the Congress hurtling to a humiliating defeat as it bagged all the five key municipal corporations in Gujarat besides the four nagar palikas that went to the polls last Sunday.

The results to the Vadodara, Rajkot, Surat, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar municipal corporation polls announced here on Tuesday saw the Congress virtually wiped out beyond recognition. Similar was the outcome of the polls to the nagar palikas of Padra near Vadodara, Mehsana in north Gujarat and Morbi and Una in Saurashtra.

With these results, Chief Minister Narendra Modi has decisively demonstrated his firm control over the State. Leading from the front, he had earlier snatched the prestigious Ahmedabad municipal corporation from the Congress, then ejected his rivals from control of the district and taluka panchayats bagging 17 of the 23 seats which went to the polls besides the bulk of the taluka panchayats in the State. The rout of the Congress is now complete with the party virtually being turned into a basket case in the results on Tuesday.

In Surat, of the total 102 seats, the BJP bagged 90 leaving the Congress to pick up the remaining crumbs-nine-while one was bagged by an independent.

Out of 84 seats in Vadodara, the BJP won 76 with the Congress forced to make do with six while independents got two. Jamnagar was not much better when of the 51 seats, BJP bagged 37, the Congress nine and independents accounted for five.

Rajkot which was controlled by the Congress fell to the BJP when the party won 59 out of 69 seats leaving a mere ten for the Congress. In Bhavnagar, the BJP bagged 39 of the total 51 seats leaving the rest 12 to the Congress. The nagar palikas of Padra, Mehsana, Morbi and Una have also gone to the BJP with the Congress administered one of their most crushing defeats in recent years.

Chief Minister Narendra Modi who has emerged as the unquestioned leader of the State with a mandate that is comprehensive and decisive attributed the victory to teamwork. “A young new team has delivered and there were no rebels or any ill-will at any level in the party,” he said.
