Nitish to abolish caste kitchens in Bihar

The Bihar Chief Minister, Mr Nitish Kumar has ordered the closure of separate caste kitchens for the police personnel in the state.

Dismayed over the reports of the functioning of such kitchens in the state police lines, Mr Kumar directed the Home Department to end the system immediately and make arrangement for a common kitchen for policemen, according to a PTI report from Patna.

The DGP, Bihar was quoted as saying the police lines would have one modernised kitchen and steps were being initiated for this. When his attention was drawn towards running of caste 
kitchens in police lines during a press conference, a shell-shocked Kumar had said “the system of caste kitchens does not go with the image of the modern and secular police. The Constitution does not permit this”, the report said. Reports had said that in Patna police line,the men in khaki were eating food cooked in kitchens run on caste lines. It has kitchens named as “Rajput Chauka”, “Bhumihar Chauka” and “Harijan Chauka”. There is a separate kitchen for Muslims also.
