Bangalore: It was a long-cherished dream come true for Bukanakere Siddalingappa Yediyurappa when he was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of the new JD (S)-BJP coalition government in Karnataka today as he had worked ceaselessly to bring the Bharatiya Janata Party to power in the state.

A born fighter, Mr Yediyurappa waged a relentless battle against successive governments as an opposition leader and at the same time made efforts to build the party from the grassroot level. He had been championing the cause of the downtrodden, especially farmers, and also rehabilitation of bonded labourers.

It was a rags to riches story for Mr Yediyurappa who had started his career as a casual worker in the Social Welfare Department.

Born in Bukanakere, a sleepy village in Mandya district, Mr Yediyurappa entered public life by joining the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1965. He migrated to Shikaripur in search of livelihood and later became the President of Jan Sangh in Shikaripur in 1972.

In 1977, he became Shikaripur Town Muncipality President and fought continuously for getting basic amenities, such as water, electricity and good roads, to the people.

Mr Yediyurappa first entered the Legislative Assembly in the year 1983 from Shikaripur. He was elected to the Assembly five times and was the Leader of the Opposition in 1996. He was instrumental in building the BJP in the state and the party winning the highest number of 79 seats in the last Assembly elections.

He was the BJP State President for nine years. In 1991, when senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi gave a call to hoist the National Flag in Srinagar, Mr Yediyurappa actively participated in it and also saw to it that the national tri-colour was hoisted in the disputed Idgah maiden in Hubli.
