NEW DELHI: Expressing concern over Nepal discarding its Hindu character, BJP MP and VHP Joint General Secretary Shreegopal Vyas said the development could prove “ruinous” for the Himalayan nation.

“Hindutva is Nepal’s life force. If this essential element is disowned, the vitality and dynamism of Nepal will be lost,” he said in a statement here.

Welcoming the visit of Nepalese Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala to India, Vyas hoped he would reconsider the matter after returning to Kathmandu.

“I hope the Prime Minister and his entourage after returning to Nepal will re-assess and re-evaluate the matter so that the millennia old cultural unity and togetherness between the two countries and our holistic cultural commonwealth that has been nourished for thousands of years could well be preserved, protected and promoted,” he said.

Vyas appealed to the people and the leadership of Nepal not to disown their Hindu character.

In a separate statement, the Shiv Sena said it would hold a demonstration in the national capital against the Central government extending assistance to Nepal as a secular country.
