Anglican church of India against Minority Status : Policy shift or trick?
Anglican church of India urged their fellow Christian groups to withdraw their claims for Minority status. Arch Bishop Stephen Vattapara heavily criticized other Christian groups on their hue and cry for grabbing special rights, resources, opportunities in the name of minority rights.
India is the only country in the world where minority Christians and Muslims are provided special constitutional rights which is not accorded to the majority. Christians and Muslims expanded their business empire, converted Hindus, amassed wealth, grabbed resources, acquired most of the educational institutions, gained political power…all in the name of minority status and power. Politicians danced to their false claims and deceptive tunes and appeased them with government funds and favorable policies. In several states and at the Center, minority Christians and Muslims have an upper hand and political power at the expense of the Hindu majority. Special status and appeasement policies have enabled them to demand more and more special privileges and status.
In this context, Indian Anglican Bishop’s statement against demands for more resources and political power for Christians in the name of minority status shocked other Christian groups who are trying to expand their horizons in India. Christians who have gained special status historically will not be a willing partner to lower their capacity for expansion.
The mentality to grab exclusively more benefits from the majority is against the teachings and philosophy of Christianity, according to the Indian Anglican Bishop.
The Bishop laments: “the Christian leaders consider education as a means of money making and this business culture is not warranted by the followers of Christ. The only motive behind this is to protect the interests of few rich Christians and not the interest of the poor”. The Bishop stated that it is unwise and immoral to grab all benefits in the name of minority status when the majority population of the nation is in poverty. This minority game plan cannot be justified. The Anglican Bishop stressed that other Christian denominations are parasites sucking the blood of the nation and they should withdraw from their power game and money grabbing techniques in the name of minority status.
