Death sentence to Jehadi terrorist

Delhi:Mohammed Afzal, the mastermind behind the Parliament attack of December 13, 2001 will be hanged on October 20 at 6 am in Delhi’s Tihar Jail. The court of additional Sessions Judge Ravindar Kaur issued a warrant to this effect on Tuesday to the Tihar Jail superintendent.

The order comes after the Supreme Court on August 4, 2005 upheld the death sentence to Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) militant Mohammed Afzal. Terming the attack by the Pakistani terrorists on Parliament as the gravest crime ever committed in Indian history to subvert the democracy, sovereignty and integrity of the country, the Supreme Court had upheld the death sentence to the JeM militant.

On December 13, 2001, a group of terrorists entered the Parliament House premises breaching security at gate number 12 and began indiscriminate firing from AK-47 rifles. They also hurled grenades killing six Delhi policemen and a Parliament employee. Five of them were also killed in the shootout that followed.

Finding Afzal, a Pakistan trained surrendered militant, guilty of being fully involved in the conspiracy, the court said the attack by terrorists on the “supreme seat of democracy” fell in the category of “rarest of the rare” crime committed with “enormous severity”.
