Atheist statue reinstalled infront of the Temple
TIRUCHY: Amidst tight security, a new bronze statue of Periyar E V Ramasamy in a sitting position, was installed on a 12 feet high pedestal, on Friday, less than a day after the cement statue of the late rationalist leader was knocked off from the same pedestal in front of the Sri Ranganathaswami Temple Rajagopuram in Srirangam, allegedly by activists of the Hindu Makkal Katchi.
The damaged statue was quickly removed by DK cadres, who replaced it with five feet bronze statue worth Rs 3.5 lakh, brought hurriedly from Chennai.
A round-the-clock police bandobust has been ordered in Srirangam to prevent the incident from snowballing. Armed police have also been deployed to guard the temple.
