High Court confirms life terms to three for murdering BJP leader
Chennai : The Madras High Court today confirmed the life sentences given to three persons held guilty by a sessions court for murdering a BJP office bearer in Coimbatore in March 2002.
The February 11, 2004 award giving life imprisonment to Abdur Ahir, Shahjahan and Sirajuddin by the additional sessions judge of Coimbatore for the murder of BJP leader Murugasen was upheld by a division bench of Justices R Balasubramanian and A C Arumughaperumal Adityan.
The bench, however, set aside sentences awarded to three others — Abbas, Abdul Nassar and Abdul Hakim — for lack of evidence.
The judges gave their ruling in response to appeals filed by the convicted persons.
The hacking to death of the BJP leader followed the murder of one Sultan Meeran a couple of days earlier on March 26, 2002.
In all eight persons were charged with the murder of Murugasen. The trial judge split the case into two after two persons, Ashraf Ali and Ibrahim alias Gobi, absconded.
